Acupuncture Questions and Answers

What does acupuncture feel like, does it hurt?

Each of my patients experiences acupuncture differently, but most feel no or minimal discomfort when the needle is inserted. People report sensations such as tingling, pressure or warmth around the area of insertion. During the treatment people become very relaxed and some even catch a nap. It’s hard to sleep when you are in pain.

If you have a giant fear of needles, please do not let that get in the way of treatment. There are alternatives to needles so please call and discuss those with me.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is safe. Millions of people are treated by acupuncture each year and relatively few complications have been reported to the FDA. I use only sterilized, single use needles as required by the FDA and have had no complications after giving over 12,000 acupuncture treatments.

Are there any side effects?

There are usually no serious risks or side effects associated with acupuncture. As with any medical procedure, there are never guarantees and it is important to discuss any reactions with me so I can further assess what is going on in your body. Many people describe feeling a deep state of relaxation immediately following the treatment which may last for a period of time. Acupuncture is a safe method of supporting the body to heal itself and restore its balance.

What should I expect on the first visit?

Expect to spend one and one half to two hours of time on the first visit. Follow-up visits are one hour. During this time period we will be discussing your immediate health concerns, the general condition of your health, lifestyle and stressors that may have contributed to your condition. The initial acupuncture treatment will also fit into this time period.

How often will I have to come?

Each individual is unique and the number of treatments varies from person to person. Factors depend on the type of condition, how long you have had the condition, whether it is acute or chronic and your general state of vitality. With pain relief I like to see patients two times a week for two to three weeks to relieve the pain much faster than one visit per week would provide. For most other conditions one treatment per week for six to eight visits works the best.

How do I know if the practitioner is qualified?

I am a fully trained acupuncturist with a Masters in Traditional Chinese Medicine (MSTCM), licensed by the state of Colorado and have a Diplomate in Acupuncture through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). In addition to my formal training, I completed a one year post-graduate internship in Five Element acupuncture. Medical doctors and chiropractors that practice acupuncture often have only ten percent of the training I have received.

Will insurance cover the costs of acupuncture?

Many insurance companies are beginning to see the benefits of acupuncture and are starting to cover the cost of treatments. Some companies, such as Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, offer excellent coverage for acupuncture and New Day Acupuncture will bill them for you. Other companies offer a discount plan in which I have agreed to take a reduced fee for services for members of a particular insurance plan. New Day Acupuncture will work with you and your insurance company to insure you are taking full advantage of your benefits.
